The USS Philadelphia (CL-41) was an American light cruiser, the keel of which was laid in May 1935, launched in November 1936, and was completely completed in 1937. The total length of the ship at the time of launching was 185 m, width 18.8 m, with a standard displacement of about 9,800 tons. The maximum speed was up to 32-33 knots. The armament of the unit at the time of launching mainly consisted of: 15 152 mm guns, 8 127 mm AA guns and 8 heavy 12.7 mm machine guns. The ship could also operate with 4 seaplanes. The USS Philadelphia (CL-41) was the second of nine Brooklyn-class cruisers launched for the US Navy between 1935 and 1938. The design of these ships was to some extent based on the design and lessons learned from the operation of heavy cruisers of the New Orleans class. At the same time, they were the American response to Japanese Mogami-class ships, also armed with 15 main artillery guns. Moreover, during the design and construction of the Brooklyn-class cruisers, great emphasis was placed on the greatest possible range of navigation, seaworthiness and careful workmanship. Ultimately, units of this type turned out to be highly successful and were successfully used during World War II. USS Philadelphia (CL-41) was built at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. From the summer of 1939 to the summer of 1941, she was stationed in the Pacific, and later she was redirected to the Atlantic and took part in the so-called Neutrality Patrols operating between Bermuda and the Nova Scotia peninsula. In the first half of 1942, it performs mainly convoy tasks, and at the end of that year it participates in Operation Torch, i.e. the Allied landing in North Africa, and in the summer of 1943 participates in landing operations in Sicily. In the first half of 1944, it operates in the Anzio area, supporting the allied forces fighting in this area with fire, and then takes part in the Dragoon operation, i.e. the landing in southern France. The unit luckily survived until the end of World War II, and in 1951 it was transferred to the Brazilian Navy, where it served under the name Barroso (C-11) until 1973.
