The USS Coontz (DLG-9 / DDG-40) was originally an American destroyer, later reclassified as a frigate, which was laid down in March 1957, launched in December 1958, and commissioned by the US Navy in 1960. The total length of the ship at the time of launching was 156.2 m, width 15.95 m, with a full displacement of about 5,600 tons. The maximum speed was up to 33 knots. The armament of the unit at the time of the launch consisted mainly of: a RIM-2 Terrier dual rocket launcher, a single, 8-rail ASROC rocket-torpedo launcher and a single 127 mm cannon. The USS Coontz (DLG-9 / DDG-40) was one of the Farragut-class missile destroyers. Ships of this type were built from the very beginning in such a way that the rockets were their main weapon. They were also designed to perform the tasks of anti-aircraft protection in aircraft carrier teams. The ships showed good seagoing prowess, good cruising range and quite modern for the 1960s weapons. USS Coontz (DLG-9 / DDG-40) took part in the Vietnam War (1964 / 1965-1975), and during its service it was modernized three times in terms of weapons and - especially - electronic equipment. In 1983, he supported the actions of US troops in Grenada. The ships were decommissioned in 1989 and sold for scrap in 1999.
