USS Iowa (BB-4) was an American battleship (pre-dreadnought), the keel of which was laid in August 1893, launched in March 1896, and was completely completed in 1897. The total length of the ship at the time of launching was 110 m, width 22 m, with a full displacement of about 12,850 tons. The maximum speed, on the other hand, did not exceed 16 knots. The unit was armed with: 4 305 mm guns, 8 203 mm guns and 6 100 mm guns. The USS Iowa (BB-4) was built for the needs of the US Navy and corrected many of the shortcomings of the earlier Indiana-class battleships. First of all, seaworthiness was significantly improved, including seagoing capacity, and a much more efficient armament deployment on the ship was introduced. USS Iowa (BB-4) took part in the Spanish-American War (1898) shortly after entering service, including the Battle of Santiago de Cuba. After that war, it served both in the Atlantic and the Pacific, and was modernized in 1908-1910. Shortly before the outbreak of World War I, she was withdrawn from service, but returned to her service in 1914. During the Great War, it mainly carried out school and training tasks. In 1919, the USS Iowa (BB-4) was permanently decommissioned.
