7042 USS TEXAS 1895

The USS Texas (not to be confused with the USS Texas BB-35) was an American battleship (pre-dreadnought) whose keel was laid in June 1889, launched in June 1892, and was completely completed in 1895. The total length of the ship at the time of launching was 94.1 m, width 19.5 m, with a full displacement of about 6,400 tons. The maximum speed, on the other hand, did not exceed 18 knots. The unit was armed with, among others: 2 305 mm guns, 6 152 mm guns and 12 57 mm rapid-fire guns. The USS Texas is sometimes seen as the first real American battleship (pre-dreadnought), comparable to the European warships of that type of that time. It was also Washington's response to the naval armaments of some Latin American states. She was the only ship in her class. The vessel was built at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Virginia. The ship took an active part in the Spanish-American War (1898), including the Battle of Santiago de Cuba. In February 1911, the USS Texas was withdrawn from active service and reclassified as an artillery target ship.
