The family of these vehicles was developed for the needs of the US armed forces in order to replace trucks dating back to World War II in the line. The emphasis is on the best possible performance and good off-road capability, hence the use of all-wheel drive (6x6). The M54 vehicle had a cargo space of 2.1 m by 4.3 m and could transport a load of up to 5 tons or soldiers with full equipment. The M39 truck family, and especially the M54 trucks, were used very intensively during the Vietnam War (1964 / 1965-1975). In the 1970s and 1980s, it was systematically replaced by trucks from the M809 and M939 series.
