The USS Caldwell (DD-605) was an American destroyer that was launched in January 1942 and was fully completed in June of the same year. The total length of the ship at the time of launching was 106.1 m, width 11 m, with a full displacement of about 2,500 tons. The maximum speed was 36-37 knots. The armament of the unit at the time of launching mainly consisted of: 5 127 mm guns and 10 533 mm torpedo tubes. In the course of World War II, the weapons were subject to changes - especially anti-aircraft weapons were strengthened. USS Caldwell (DD-605) was one of the Benson-class destroyers built for the US Navy in 1939-1943. Units of this type were essentially a modernization of the Sims class, and compared to the original, they had very far-reaching changes to the propulsion system, which not only slightly improved their performance, but also increased the survivability of ships on the battlefield. They were also equipped with 5-tube torpedo tubes. Overall, they were successful destroyers with no little combat value. The USS Caldwell (DD-605) was built at the Bethlehem Steel Corporation in San Francisco. Shortly after entering service, he was assigned to serve in the Aleutian region and operated on them and elsewhere in Alaska until mid-1943. In September of that year, he took part in operations in the Tarawa area, and shortly thereafter supported landing operations in Makin and the Gilbert Islands, while in January 1944 he participated in operations against the islands of Kwajalein and Majuro. In December 1944, it was damaged by a kamikaze attack. In April 1945, having already undergone necessary repairs and renovations, he supported the Allied activities in Borneo. During his service, he was awarded 8 Battle Stars. The unit was withdrawn from service in 1946 and sold for scrap in 1966.
