The USS Daniel Webster (SSBN-626, later MTS-626) was an American nuclear powered submarine carrying ballistic missile (SSBN) missiles. The keel for this unit was laid in 1961, the launch took place in April 1963, and the entry into service with the US Navy took place in April 1964. The ship was 130 meters long, 10 meters wide, and had a displacement of 8,250 tons. The maximum underwater speed is approx. 22 knots. The main armament was 16 Polaris and later Poseidon ballistic missile launchers and 4 533 mm torpedo tubes. USS Daniel Webster was one of the La Fayette-class submarines. The Lafayette-class ships were constructed as a development of the Ethan Allen-class ships, but were externally very similar to them and had very similar combat properties and performance. For this reason, it happens that Lafayette, Ethan Allen, but also George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and James Madison are included in one ship class, which is not entirely accurate. General units of the above-mentioned types were created 41 and very often they are referred to as "41 for Freedom". One of the ships of this class - USS Daniel Webster - was built at the General Dynamics shipyard in Groton. During its service, the unit carried out nearly 70 combat patrols, and during its service it was converted from Polaris A-3 missiles to Poseidon missiles in the second half of the 1970s. In the early 1990s, due to the end of the Cold War and the entry into the Ohio-type ship line, the unit was reclassified as a moored training ship (MTS), changing the designation to MTS-626.
