USS Ethan Allen (SSBN-608) is an American nuclear-powered submarine - carrier of nuclear-warhead ballistic missiles (SSBN), the keel of which was laid in September 1959, was launched in November 1960, and was commissioned by the US Navy place in 1961. The total length of the ship at the time of launching was 125 m, width 10.1 m, with an underwater displacement of about 8,000 tons. The maximum underwater speed did not exceed 21 knots. The unit had 16 ballistic missile launchers and 4 533 mm torpedo tubes. USS Ethan Allen (SSBN-608) was the lead ship of the class of submarines of the same name, ie Ethan Allen. This type of units was created as an evolutionary development of the George Washington type and was largely based on the project of the very successful Skipjack hunting submarines. At the same time, they were actually the first SSBN units in the US Navy, which from the very beginning were designed and built for this role. The basic armament of the Ethan Allen class ships were 16 Polaris A-2 missiles with a range of up to 4,600 km, capable of carrying (after modernization) three W58 nuclear warheads with a capacity of 200 kT each. USS Ethan Allen (SSBN-608) served actively in the US Navy until 1983, and in 1999 was completely withdrawn from the line.
