North Reef Lighthouse was built on a shallow coral sandbank 120 kilometers east of the modern city of Gladstone in Australia in the Pacific Ocean. The lighthouse was put into use in 1878. Due to the very specific location, great emphasis was placed on the most solid structure, which resulted in the creation of a cylindrical base with a diameter of as much as 12 m and a height of 15 m, with the height of the lighthouse tower itself being 24 meters. The range of its white light is 15 nautical miles (NM), or about 28 kilometers. Interestingly, over time, a small island with vegetation was created around the lighthouse. In 1977 the lighthouse was electrified. As a curiosity, it can be noted that from 1987 to the present day North Reef lighthouse is powered by solar energy, thanks to the use of six solar panels. The lighthouse is still active and not accessible to tourists.
