HMS Churchill (S46) was a British nuclear powered fighter submarine (SSN), the keel of which was laid in June 1967, was launched in December 1968, and was completely completed in July 1970. The total length of the ship at the time of launching was 86.9 m, width 10.1 m, with an underwater displacement of approx. 4,900 tons. In turn, the maximum speed while submerged did not exceed 28-29 knots. The unit had 6 bow 533 mm torpedo tubes. HMS Churchill (S46) was the first of three submarines to make up the Churchill class. Ships of this type were to a large extent based on the design of the Valiant type and it happens that they are treated as a sub-type of this class. And while the external dimensions, displacement and underwater speed are basically the same, the Churchill units have numerous changes in the internal structure, slightly different electronic equipment and - probably - even better silencing of the engine room. HMS Churchill was built at the Vickers Shipbuilding Limited shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness, and is of course named after a British statesman during the Second World War. During its service, it performed primarily patrol tasks, and was also selected to test a new pump-jet propulsion system. The ship was decommissioned in 1991.
