Orkan (or Project 660M) is the name of a class of Polish missile corvettes that entered service in the Polish Navy (hereinafter: MW) in the years 1992-1995. A single ship of this type is 48.9 meters long and 8.65 meters wide. Full displacement does not exceed 400 tons, and the maximum speed is around 34-36 knots. The armament currently consists of: a single 76.2 mm AK-176 cannon, a 30 mm AK-630 set, and a rocket launcher for 8 RBS15 anti-ship missiles. Orkan-type units were built on the hulls of the German Sassnitz-type units that were not commissioned for service, and the finishing works were carried out at Remontowa Shipbuilding in Gdańsk. This type of ships was introduced to service as a supplement to the 1241RE units. It was assumed that they would be dedicated to performing quick and hidden attacks on enemy surface units, operating relatively close to the shore, but also to carrying out patrol tasks. In 2006-2009, the units underwent modernization, as a result of which their main armament was the successful Swedish-made RBS15 water-to-water missiles, and their electronic equipment, especially radars, was subject to profound changes. These changes certainly increased the combat value of Orkan-type units, but did not eliminate their two significant shortcomings: poor air defense and limited operational capabilities in heavy seas. The Orkan class consists of 3 units - all of them are in active service in the Polish Navy.
