HMS Starling (U66) was a British sloop, the keel of which was laid in October 1941, launched in October 1942, and entered service with the Royal Navy in 1943. The total length of the ship at the time of launching was 91.3 m, width 11.7 m, and the displacement reached 1,350 tons. However, the maximum speed was around 20 knots. The ship's armament was mainly composed of: 4 102 mm AA guns, 4 40 mm AA guns and 8 depth charge launchers. HMS Starling (U66) was one of the ships belonging to the Black Swan class (modified). Units of this type were larger than most British corvettes of the time, but were dedicated to the same tasks - covering their own convoys and ZOP (anti-submarine combat). They not only had extensive weapons of this type, but also had good capabilities to counter air targets. Undoubtedly, these were successful, well-designed units, with considerable sea prowess and high combat value. HMS Starling (U66) turned out to be the most famous ship of its class, taking a very active part in the Battle of the Atlantic, during which it sank as many as 14 German U-boats alone or as a team! The unit also took part in supporting the Allies during the Normandy landings in June 1944. HMS Starling (U66) happily survived World War II and was not scrapped until 1965.
