Trafalgar is the name of a class of British nuclear fighter submarines (ANNs). Units of this type were built in the years 1979-1991. In total, seven units of this type were built. The Trafalgar-class ship is 85.4 m long, 9.8 m wide, and has a displacement of approximately 5,200 tons. The maximum underwater speed is approx. 30 knots. The ships of this type are equipped with five 533 mm torpedo tubes. Trafalgar-class ships were developed and put into production to replace Swiftsure-class ships in the RoyaL Navy. The new ships, on the one hand, adopted quite a number of solutions used on their predecessors, but at the same time differed significantly from them. First of all, Trafalgar ships have a completely new sonar, a new and more compact nuclear reactor, and they are also slightly longer. Much better methods of soundproofing the ship were also used - first of all, shallow anechoic shells and a very advanced propeller emitting less sounds, which was later replaced on most units of this class with a thruster, also known as a water-jet or pump-jet propeller. Since 2001, Trafalgar units have been modernized, mainly in the field of sonars and electronic systems.
