Units of type Walrus are Dutch classically powered fighter submarines (diesel-electric), which were built in the years 1979-1990. A single ship of this type is 67.7 m long and 8.4 m wide, and the underwater displacement is approximately 2,800 tons. The maximum underwater speed is 21-22 knots. The armament consists of 4 533 mm torpedo tubes, and the maximum stock of weapons is 20 torpedoes, mines or rockets. Walrus submarines were developed for the needs of the Dutch Navy (hereinafter: MW) to replace Dolfijn-class units, and their design was initially very clearly based on the Zwaardvis-class ships. However, in the course of construction, numerous design changes were made, which de facto led to the creation of a completely new class of submarines. The Walrus class is characterized mainly by the so-called hull. teardrop shape (Albacore type) as well as the stern tail in "X" arrangement. High-quality steel with increased strength was also used. They were also appropriately quieted - especially when swimming at low underwater speeds. Units of this class are undoubtedly good quality submarines with considerable maneuverability and good soundproofing.
