Tango-class units (or Project 641B) were Soviet classic diesel-electric fighter submarines that began entering service in 1972. In total, 18 ships of this class were built. A single unit of this type was 91 m long and 9.1 m wide, with an underwater displacement of about 3,800 tons. The maximum underwater speed was up to 16 knots. The armament consisted of 6 bow 533 mm torpedo tubes with a torpedo reserve of 16-18. Tango-class units (Project 641B) were developed and built for the Soviet Navy (MW) in order to complement in line and eventually replace Foxtrot-class submarines (Project 641). Compared to its predecessors, the Tango class received a slightly different shape of the hull, devoid of the bow sonar pear and stern torpedo tubes, the shape of the conning tower was changed, and it was significantly better soundproofed. It can also be assumed that more modern electronic equipment was installed on it. With time, some of the Tango units were able to fire SS-N-15 missiles. Still, it was a ship dedicated to operating mainly in the coastal zone, although with considerable autonomy of sailing. Ships of this class were replaced in the Soviet, and later in the Russian Navy, by Kilo-type units.
