Type 214 units is a class of contemporary, German classic fighter submarines (diesel-electric), which are built for export markets. The first unit of this class entered service in 2007. A single unit of this type is 65 m long and 6.3 m wide, and the underwater displacement is approximately 1,800 tons. The maximum underwater speed is up to 20 knots. The armament, on the other hand, consists of eight 533 mm torpedo tubes. Type 214 submarines were developed at the shipyard Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft based in Kiel, as a specific combination of design solutions and experience gained from the operation of units of types: 209 and 212A. They use the AIP (Eng. Air Independent Propulsion), very modern electronic equipment, as well as the possibility of reaching a depth of at least 300 m, although it is not uncommon to mention that ships of this class are able to descend even to about 400 meters. Units of this type have a lot of possibilities to combat both surface and underwater targets. Currently, ships of this type are used in the navies of Greece, South Korea, Portugal and Turkey.
