The Nazario Sauro type units are modern Italian fighter submarines with classic (diesel-electric) propulsion. The first unit of this type was built in 1980. A single ship of this type, in its chronologically earliest version, is 63.9 m long and 6.8 m wide, with a submarine displacement of 1,650 tons. The maximum underwater speed is up to 20 knots. The armament consists of 6 533 mm torpedo tubes. Nazario Sauro-class ships were the second class of Italian submarines built after the end of World War II, and were developed to complement and eventually replace Toti-class ships in the line. Compared to their predecessors, they were significantly larger, had more modern electronic equipment and had a wider range of weapons. They also had a range and autonomy of action, enabling them to operate in the entire Mediterranean basin. In the course of production, a total of 4 sub-types were created, which differed from each other mainly in dimensions, but had almost identical combat capabilities. In total, 8 units of this type were created, of which 4 have already been transferred to the reserve. Since the beginning of the 21st century, they have been systematically replaced by Todaro class units.
