Units of type Sjöormen were Swedish classic diesel-electric fighter submarines, which were launched in the years 1967-1968. A single ship of this type was 51 m long and 6.1 m wide, and the underwater displacement was 1,400 tons. The maximum underwater speed was up to 20-21 knots, while the depth of the draft was determined at 150 m. The armament consisted of 4 533 mm torpedo tubes and 2 400 mm tubes. Units of type Sjöormen were developed for the needs of the Swedish Navy (hereinafter: MW) in the 1960s. At the time of their entry into service, they were considered to be one of the most technologically advanced classic-propelled submarines in the world! They had an innovative X-shaped aft tail, the so-called drop-shaped hull, modeled to some extent on the USS Albacore and the American Barbel class. They were also distinguished by a very low noise level and high - like a diesel-electric-powered ship - underwater speed. In the 1990s, four ships of this type (out of 5 built!) Were transferred to the MW of Singapore, where they formed the Challenger class.
