N700045 GERMAN SUBMARINE TYPE 206A

The Type 206 is the name of a class of German diesel-electric fighter submarines (SS). Units of this type were built in the years 1969-1975. In total, eighteen of this type were built, two of which are still in active service. Type 206 is 48.5 m long, 4.58 m wide, and has a displacement of approximately 500 tons. The maximum underwater speed is approximately 17 knots. The ships of this type are equipped with eight 533 mm torpedo tubes. The Type 206 ships were developed and put into production in order to replace the Type 205 ships in the German Deutsche Marine. Like the previous class, the Type 206A ships were relatively small and intended for operations mainly in the Baltic Sea basin and the so-called Danish straits, and only in the second row they were assumed to be used, for example, in the North Sea or in the Atlantic. Their main task was to locate and destroy Warsaw Pact ships and its landing units. Such assumptions determined the necessity to obtain a relatively high underwater speed, good sonars and adequate silencing of the vessel. However, the depth of the maximum immersion was of secondary importance, considering the relatively low mean depth of the Baltic Sea. However, it is estimated that ships of this type can reach a draft of over 200 meters. In 1987-1992, twelve ships of this type were upgraded to the Type 206A standard. The works included, among others: installing new sonar, new periscopes and a new fire control system. Two units of this type were sold to Colombia.
