The USS Zumwalt (DDG-1000) is a next-generation American missile destroyer, possibly opening a completely new class of this type of vessel in the US Navy. The keel for this unit was laid in 2011, launched in 2013, and the ship entered service in October 2016. The ship is 183 meters long and 24.1 meters wide. Its displacement is about 14,000 tons. The propulsion is provided by diesel engines and two Rolls-Royce MT-30 gas turbines, cooperating with AIM electric motors, which give the ship a top speed of approx. 30-31 knots. The cost of building the ship is estimated at $ 3.5-4.4 billion according to 2014 prices. The USS Zumwalt (DDG-1000) is one of the most avant-garde and innovative maritime constructions of the beginning of the 21st century, which - perhaps - will pave the way for the development of US Navy surface ships. The ship's uniqueness comes from the very shape of the hull and superstructures, which have been largely subordinated to the requirements of stealth technology. The ship also has the so-called piercing bow of the hull, very rarely used on ships of this class. In addition, USS Zumwalt has a very efficient and generating significant excess power integrated power supply system, which - perhaps - will allow the installation of laser and / or energy weapons in the future. The ship also uses the very advanced AN / SPY-3 Dual-Band Radar (DBR). In its construction, composites were used on a very large scale and the so-called external rocket launchers and a completely new 155 mm deck gun (the so-called Advanced Gun System). Undoubtedly, the introduction of the USS Zumwalt means a significant technological progress in the US Navy in relation to the destroyer DDG-51 (Arleigh Burke class).
