Cape Otway Lighthouse was built in 1848 and was put into operation in the same year. The lighthouse is located in the southern part of the state of Victoria, Australia. Currently, every year from spring to winter, it is a very important landmark for tourists who want to watch whales flowing nearby. The construction of the lighthouse had already started in 1846, but it was extended until 1848 due to unfavorable and difficult terrain conditions. The lighthouse tower is 20 meters high, but thanks to its foundation on a hill, it rises 91 meters above sea level. As a result, the range of the white light it casts was 26 nautical miles (NM), or approx. 48 kilometers. During the operation of the lighthouse, as many as 8 ships crashed in its vicinity. It ended its activity in 1994, after 146 years of service! This makes it the longest-running lighthouse in Australia so far.
