Two main types of the FN SCAR rifle were developed. The first of them, designated as the FN SCAR L Rifle (Mk 16), has a caliber of 5.56 mm, uses NATO ammunition of this caliber and acts as an automatic rifle. The second version is the 7.62 mm FN SCAR H (Mk 17) rifle, which acts as a manual automatic rifle. Both weapons have replaced or supplemented the service rifles: M4A1, Mk 18 CQBR and Mk12 SPR, but also the M14 and Mk 11. Both versions of the FN SCAR rifle have sniper variants.
