The MGM-31B Pershing II is an American medium-range tactical ballistic missile (MRBM) of the ground-to-ground class, which was mounted on mobile platforms. The first trials with prototypes of the new missile were carried out in 1977, and in 1983 the missile achieved operational status. The length of the missile was 10.61 meters, the diameter was 1.02 meters, and the take-off weight was 7,400 kilograms. The maximum range of the missile was 1,800 kilometers. The MGM-31B Pershing II was created as a far-reaching development of the Pershing I missile. Compared to its predecessor, it differed in the use of a new warhead, a new - much more modern - guidance system, new propulsion and modified ground systems. In fact, Pershing II was a completely new missile, with phenomenal accuracy for the 1980s and more than twice the range of the Pershing I. Also its nuclear warhead (designation W85) had a selective power of 5 to 50 kilotons. This great medium-range missile remained in service from 1984 to 1991. It is believed that its parameters led to the signing of the INF treaty by the USSR in 1987.
