McDonnell Douglas / General Dynamics A-12 Avenger II was an American, unrealized design of a deck bomber from the Cold War period. The machine was to be powered by two engines General Electric F412-GE-D5F2 . The estimated maximum speed of the aircraft was up to 930 km / h, and the maximum range was to reach 1,500 kilometers. The A-12 Avenger II was created as part of the ATA program initiated by the US Navy in 1983, which was to lead to the creation of a machine that would replace the A-6 Intruder aircraft in the line. Both companies (McDonnell Douglas and General Dynamics) that started working on this plane decided to use a very unusual flying wing system, as well as the use of stealth technology in the A-12. The machine was also designed from the beginning to carry precision weapons. However, the accumulation of many technological innovations and a complex aerodynamic system led to a radical increase in the cost of the entire project, as a result of which it was completely canceled in 1991. The US Navy opted for the much more classic F / A-18 E / F Super Hornet aircraft.
