The BMD-2 infantry fighting vehicle was developed in the early 1980s and entered service with the Soviet Army in 1985. Serial production of the vehicle also began in 1985, and the vehicle is still in service with the Russian Federation troops to this day (2017). The BMD-2 is powered by the same engine as the BMD-1, i.e. a single 240hp 5D20 engine and can carry up to 4-5 landing troops. The basic armament of the BMD-2 is: the 30mm 2A42 cannon, 1 PKT machine gun cal .: 7.62 mm and 1 ATGM launcher (anti-tank guided missile) 9M111 Bassoon or 9M113 Competition. The BMD-2 infantry fighting vehicle, like the BMD-1, was designed primarily for service in the Soviet airborne forces, and its development was based on the experience of the war in Afghanistan (1979-1989). First of all - in relation to the BMD-1 - the main armament of the vehicle was changed, a new turret of the B30 type with a one-man crew was used, and its ergonomics was improved by relieving the tasks of the vehicle commander. The ability to overcome water obstacles without special preparation and the possibility of air transport by airplanes (e.g. AN-12) or helicopters (e.g. MI-6) was also retained. The BMD-2 vehicle was used in combat in Afghanistan in 1979-1989. Car - acc. official data - it was not exported.
