The Polish Military Contingent in Afghanistan (PKW Afghanistan for short) was assigned to operate in that country in 2002 and was a separate contingent of the Polish Armed Forces, whose task was to help restore political and military stability in Afghanistan. Initially, 300 soldiers were trained for the first mission in Afghanistan, but eventually about 100 - mainly sappers, logisticians and commandos. In 2007, the contingent was significantly enlarged and received new tasks, including: cooperation with the Afghan National Army, patrol and convoy tasks, training of members of the Afghan police and assistance in the reconstruction of Afghanistan's infrastructure. It is worth adding that on August 16, 2007 there was the so-called the Nangar Chel incident that killed Afghan civilians. Over time, the Polish contingent in Afghanistan was reduced, and in 2014 it numbered around 200 soldiers. It is assumed that the experience gained during the missions in Afghanistan and Iraq led to the initiation or acceleration of many processes of technical modernization of the Polish Armed Forces.
