1st Polish Infantry Division Tadeusz Kościuszko, was formed in May 1943. in Siecle on the Oka river. Its commander was Col. Zygmunt Berling - interestingly, a lieutenant colonel of the Polish Army during the Second Polish Republic. This division was trained and equipped in accordance with Soviet standards, and a large part of its officer corps were citizens of the USSR. Interestingly, however, it had Polish insignia (the so-called Piast eagle from 1943) and it was agreed to hold field masses. It underwent its baptism of fire in the Battle of Lenino in October 1943, where it lost about 20-25% of the state. After this battle, it was moved to the rear, and based on it, the 1st Polish Army was created, later renamed the 1st Army of the Polish People's Army. After entering Poland, the 2nd Army of the Polish People's Army was also formed at the end of 1944. At the end of World War II, these armies included, inter alia: 1 0 infantry divisions, 5 independent armored brigades or a cavalry brigade. It is worth adding that these troops fought in the Battle of Studzianki in 1944, in bloody battles in Pomerania (first of all, they captured the Kołobrzeg fortress in March 1945), forced the Odra river and took part in the fighting in Berlin in 1945. It was also the soldiers of the Polish People's Army who planted the Polish banner at the Brandenburg Gate in May 1945, symbolically emphasizing the Polish victory over the Third Reich.
