The Sputnik 8K71PS was a Soviet carrier rocket from the post-war period. Its length was 30 meters, with a diameter of 2.99 meters and a total weight of 267 tons. It was a two-stage rocket powered by a total of five 8K71PS-0 and 8K71PS-1 engines. The thrust at the launch of the rocket was 3886 kN. The Sputnik 8K71PS rocket was one of the first launchers in the history of Soviet astronautics, and in essence was an almost unchanged R-7 ICBM (NATO code: SS-6 Sapwood). In total, there were only two launches of this rocket, but at least one of them has gone down in history. It was the 8K71PS rocket that launched the Earth's first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1, into orbit on October 4, 1957. The launch took place from the Baikonur cosmodrome in today's Kazakhstan. The second launch took place almost exactly a month later and took Sputnik 2 into orbit.
