The first prototypes of the 2S7 Pion self-propelled howitzer appeared in the early 1970s, and serial production began in 195 or 1976. The 2S7 self-propelled howitzer is powered by a single 840 HP V-46-I engine. The basic armament of the vehicle is: 203 mm 2A44 howitzer. Serial additional weapons in the form of machine guns were not used. The 2S7 self-propelled howitzer was built on the chassis of the T-80 main battle tank. It was dedicated to heavy and very heavy artillery units at the front level. It was able to fire high-explosive shells at a distance of up to 37,500 m and missile-assisted missiles at a distance of up to 47,500 m! At the same time, the range of 2S7 Pion self-propelled howitzers used also included artillery shells with tactical nuclear warheads. The average rate of fire did not exceed 2 rounds per minute. This was successfully changed in the 1983 modernization, increasing it to 3 shots. The modified howitzer was designated 2S7-M Pion-M. The 2S7 self-propelled howitzer was exported to the Warsaw Pact countries, including Poland and Czechoslovakia. It remained in the service of the Polish Army until 2006.
