1st Field Division of the Luftwaffe (Ger. 1. Luftwaffen-Feld-Division ) was formed in mid-1942 in Królewiec in East Prussia. She was the first of a dozen or so field divisions of the Luftwaffe. It was composed mainly of soldiers who had previously served in the German Air Force as ground service. The division consisted of four infantry battalions and support units in the form of artillery units, sappers, communications and staff. The unit was brought to the front in December 1942 and although it was part of the 18th Army, subordinate to the Amia Group "North", it was still under the command of the Luftwaffe. This state of affairs did not change until December 1943! The only major clash in which the division took part was a very heavy retreat in the Novgorod region at the beginning of 1944. In their course, the unit suffered significant losses, and its remnants were incorporated into the 28th Rifle Division. Thus, at the beginning of 1944, the 1st Field Division of the Luftwaffe was disbanded.
