N700143 RUBIS CLASS SUBMARINE - FINAL CONFIGURATION

Rubis-type units are French nuclear-powered fighter submarines (ANNs), which were built between 1976 and 1990. A single ship of this type is 73.6 m long and 7.6 m wide, and the underwater displacement is 2,600 tons. The maximum underwater speed is estimated at 25 knots, while the depth of the submersion is most often determined at over 300 m. The armament consists of 4 533 mm torpedo tubes. Rubis-class submarines were built for the needs of the French Navy ( Marine Nationale), as a more technologically advanced complement to Agosta units. Compared to this type, they differed primarily in the use of nuclear propulsion, but also a much better maximum immersion depth, underwater speed or a richer range of weapons. They also had much better target detection capabilities. At the time of entering service, they were distinguished by a very modern central computer system, which was systematically modernized, as well as the incredible structural compactness of the propulsion reactor. It is worth pointing out, however, that the first units of this type had problems with generating excessive noise, which led to a modification called Am èthyste which, among other things, led to a change in the shape of the front part of the beak on the fifth and sixth units of this class. In the period 1989-1995, the first four ships of this type were also rebuilt accordingly. Vessels of this class will be replaced in the Marine Nationale by the Barracuda-class submarines.
